Critical Dental Care
Research shows that to provide the best care possible there should be at least one dentist for every 2,500 people. However, in Jamaica there is only one dentist for every 53,000 people. For those unable to afford or find care, oral disease can run rampant. Uncontrolled dental disease has been shown to cause systemic health issues including cardiovascular disease. However, dental disease is easily controlled and prevented with proper oral hygiene and diet. With your generous support we can make a difference in hundreds of lives by treating dental disease and improving oral hygiene.
Past trips have been very successful. Last year, by partnering with the Helping Hands Clinic, we saw a total of 378 patients by the week’s end. We did 282 extractions, 59 restorations, 81 cleanings and 39 root canals. This equates to a donated dollar value of $100,557.00US and $1,256,962.50J. Students were able to help others while gaining valuable patient experience, such as alleviating patient pain, performing emergency extractions, conducting cleanings, providing fluoride treatments, and teaching oral hygiene. We will continue to expand our efforts this year by treating even more patients and having a larger impact on the island.
While we look forward to improving the lives of these patients, we are unable to make such an impact without the support of people like you. Without your thoughtful gift, we will be extremely limited in the quantity of care we can provide. We need your help for expenses like supplies that would otherwise be paid out-of-pocket by students and organizers. Any gift will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for being a part of our mission to serve the dental needs of Jamaica! "
